About A Southern Jacob & Jacobs Family Genealogy
I dedicate this website to my 1st cousin, Charles Sherard Jacobs III, other wise known as Jake, and to my one and only brother, John Andrew Jacobs. For Jake and I, as well as my brother John, identify with one another on so many passed occurrences that pertain to our Jacobs family.

I thank you for visiting and I wish you well in whatever endeavor may have brought you here for this visit. In the future I will be adding new information, photos, and resources to my site, both general and state specific in nature. So please, check back often and see what's new.

It is my hope that this JACOB(s) Family History will "Paint the Picture" of how the many known family branches and descendants of John JACOB and his wife, Anne CHENEY, of Anne Arundel County, Maryland (1600 & 1700's), survived, grew, migrated, became early settlers, and also fought for their Country's freedom.

Now, ... Let's find out just who we are and where we came from ...

*********************************************************************************************** ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Friday, 06 February 2009: I have cleaned and updated the homepage for this website. To allow for limited space, I have eliminated the "What's New" column, and added a "Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due" column.

Thursday, 27 November 2008: The son of my nephew John "Alan" Jacobs, was burned badly in a terrible accident on the evening of Thanksgiving. His name is Nathaniel Alan "AJ" Jacobs, he's 11 years old, and he is reported to have 2nd, 3rd & 4th degree burn on 49 percent of his body. It seems that he poured a mixture of motor oil & gasoline onto a fire his stepfather had built, and of course it exploded. AJ was air-lifted to the Grady Memorial Hospital's Burn Center, located in Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA.

Please join his family in prayers for his recovery. A website has been created for AJ if you'd like to leave a message in his guestbook. The URL is: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/ajjacobs Your support in AJ's speedy recovery is greatly appreciated!

Wednesday, July 09, 2008: After all this time I finally have "the magic code" that allows paragraphs in the details listed on all the ancestors & descendants pages. It's so simple it's sick. I've been building two different websites for my two family names since 2004. This means that I've got "a lot" of work to do to go back over all my entries and add paragraphs, but given time I will correct all of this. I've also found out how I can add music to the sites. Little by little...

Monday, April 21, 2008: I have renewed this family research website with TribalPages for another year, and I was also able to upgrade it; which allows a total of 5000 photos to be uploaded. This upgrade is fantastic news, since I was previously only allowed 1000 photos and I was too close to the total amount for any type of comfort. Thank you TribalPages!

Sunday, March 09, 2008: The visitor password has been updated and changed.

*********************************************************************************************** GIVING CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE...

The history posted on this website has been made possible from my own years of personal research, and by the gracious sharing of many other family researchers and distant cousins which I will endeavor to list below.

1. I've added the family history from a Jacob & Jacobs research report, which is the combination of three different women's work. These three women were "Mrs. Jewell Holladay Cumbee" (my 2nd cousin-1 time removed, and the sweet lady that gave me this report), "Miss Bertha Jacobs" (2nd cousin-1 time removed), and "Miss Eugenia Halley Smith" (a descendant of Martha Jacob Halley, and the lady actually responsable for breaking through our brickwalls and connecting us to the Jacob family of Anne Aundel and Prince George's Counties of Maryland). Mrs. Jewell is the only one that is still with us. Miss Bertha & Miss Eugenia has passed on. Nevertheless, I want to give all three of these ladies a heartfelt THANK YOU!

2. Great Aunt Mary Gilliam Smith, widow of Henry "Hewlett" Smith, of Silver Spring, Maryland, sent me a book several years ago tiltled, "The Combs Family And Their Forebears", by Elizabeth Combs Forrester. Most, but not all of what has been added to this website on the Combs & Smith family has come from this book. Hewlett Smith was a brother to my grandmother, Jessie Hill Smith Jacobs. Thank you so much, Aunt Mary!

3. To my Uncle, James R. Farmer (jrf3157@webtv.net), and to my brother, John A. Jacobs (no email addy), of LaGrange, Troup Co., Georgia I want to give a "SPECIAL & HEARTFELT THANKS" for their wonderful Y-DNA contributions to the surname DNA Projects conducted by Family Tree DNA. My family's membership and participation in these projects would not be possible without them. Thank you Uncle James & Bro. I love & miss you both!

PLEASE NOTE: The female DNA is now also being traced through the Farmer Project with Uncle James's DNA. This is a mother to daughter history that ended with my grandmother and Uncle James's mother, Willie Beatrice "Bea" Grizzle Farmer.

The female DNA trail tracks backward through Bea & her mother, Jessie Beatrice Stone Grizzle; then back through Bea's grandmother, Martha Martiny "Tiny" Royster Stone; back through her great grandmother, Nancy Mitchell Royster; back through her 2nd great grandmother, Anna Thomas Mitchell. (It's my hope that I will discover the parents of Anna Thomas Mitchell in the near future).

4. I want to thank ALL and any future members & cemetery photographers (to numerous to mention by name) from the website, FindAGrave.com, for helping find and photograph the gravestones of many of my ancestors. Thank you all!

5. Marsha Faulk (nanimar2002@yahoo.com), has graciously shared her Hadaway & Jacobs family history. This history starts with William Hadaway, born before 1740 in North Carolina, and died about 1794 in Halifax County, North Carolina. It's also important to note here that a descendant of Williams Hadaway's, James David "Jim" Hadaway and his line of descendants from Chambers County, Alabama, are related to the family line of our John & Anne (Cheney) Jacob of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. James Hadaway married Rebecca Hannah Jacobs, daughter of Mordecai Jacobs, CSA, who married Sarah Jane Crowder, both of Chambers County, Alabama. This line is marked with the red highlighted box in order to show the relationship. Thank you Marsha, and bless you for taking the time to guide me correctly (one more time) with your Hadaway reports! You have been such a help to me with this family, and somehow "Thank You" just doesn't seem enough...

6. Marsha Faulk (nanimar2002@yahoo.com), and Patrick Childress (londonwildcat@earthlink.net), have been responsible for most of the Crowder family history. My 2nd Great Grandmother was Sarah Jane "Janie" Crowder, married my 2nd Great Grandfather, Mordecai Jacob(s), CSA. Janie was the daughter of Bartholomew Crowder and Mary M. Garrett Crowder. Thank you both, Marsha and Patrick! Welcome to our family.

7. Hazel "Ann" Jacob (annjacob@sbcglobal.net), a descendant & 3rd Great Granddaughter of Walter Jacob and his wife, Gracey Bond, has just recently begun her family history research, shared everything with me that she has so far, and I am proud to introduce her to everyone as my 5th Cousin. Note that there is no "s" on the end of her surname. Ann descends through Walter's son Mordecai, grandson Edwin T. Jacob, great grandson Edwin Harold Jacob, and his 2nd great grandson Harold Theophilus Jacob, who is Ann's father. Walter and Benjamin Jacob (married Rebecca Barron in Jones Co., GA), my 3rd great grandfather, were brothers and both were sons of our Patriot, Benjamin Jacob (married Eleanor Odell). Thank you so much Ann for contacting me and providing your family history as you know at this time for our family website. Please keep us updated in the future! Welcome to our family.

8. Claudy "Wayne" Jacobs (jacobs01@cox.net), the 2nd Great Grandson of Walter Jacob and his wife, Gracey Bond, has given me permission to enter his private family tree on Ancestry.com, and gather his family history for my own website here. Wayne descends through Walter's son, John W. Jacob, through his son, John W. Jr., and through his son, John Melvin Jacobs. Thank you so much, Wayne, and welcome to our family!

9. Barbara Jacobs Hammett (jdandbarb@embarqmail.com), the 2nd Great Granddaughter of Walter Jacob and his wife, Gracey Bond, and sister of the above Wayne Jacobs, has and continues to share her family history and photos for this website. Thank you for everything you've done, and will continue to do, Barbara! Welcome to our family!

10. Derrilynne "Lynne" Patric' Wendel Biggs (rebelwoman1957@msm.com) of Camden, Delaware, is the 4th Great Granddaughter of George Washington Nix and Telitha Garrett of Louisiana. Tabitha Nix, daughter of George & Telitha Nix, married John W. Jacob, son of Walter Jacob & Gracey Bond, thus the Jacob/Nix connection. Thank You Lynne for providing and sharing your Nix family history! Welcome to our family.

11. Bonnie Jane Jacobs Mastro (bjm@bonniemastro.com), of Rome, Floyd Co., GA, is a descendant of James Garrett Jacobs, son of Mordecai Jacob, CSA & Sarah Jane "Janie" Crowder. My Great Grandfather Sherrod Mordecai Jacobs was the brother of James Garrett Jacobs. So, if Bonnie and I are correct then we are 5th Cousins! She has given her permission to visit her private "Jacobs Family Tree", on Ancestry.com, and gather her family data & photos and add to this website. Thank You so much for your time and help, Bonnie! Welcome to our family.

12. Christopher Jacobs (christopher.jacobs@att.net), a distant cousin and most importantly the Administrator of the Jacob(s) Y-DNA Project being held on the website, FamilyTreeDNA.com (FTDNA). On behalf of "all" of my family and for myself, I'd like to thank you for all the hard work you have done, and will continue to do in order to help us understand and discover where our ancestor, John Jacob, Sr. of Anne Arundel Co., Maryland truly came from before arriving in our great little country. Thank you so much, Chris, and welcome to our family!

13. William Alfred Jacobs Jr., better known as Al Jacobs (aljacobs@alltel.net), has shared his family history and photos for this website. Al and I share the same 2nd great grandfather, Pvt. Mordecai Jacobs, CSA. Al descends through Mordecai's son, William Alexander Jacobs, where as I descend through his son, Sherrod Mordecai Jacobs. I "think" that makes Al & I, 4th cousins. Thank you for all your help, and welcome to our family, Al.

14. Scott Thomas Sherard (scosher_2014@yahoo.com), a distant cousin, has shared his Sherard family history and his wonderful family photos for our website. Scott is the son of Milligan Fuller Sherard, the grandson of David Fuller Sherard, the great grandson of David Sherard, and the 2nd great grandson of William Dickey Sherard. My paternal great grandmother was the sister of Scott's great grandfather, David Sherard, and both were children of William Dickey Sherard. Thank you for all the hard work you have done, and for sharing your work with us so that we might see & know this rich family history on this website. Welcome to our family, Scott!!

15. Merilyn Loyd Cranford, granddaughter of William Mordecai Jacobs, born in 1874, Troup County, GA and married Harriett Maria Wasson, in 1913, in Dallas County, TX. Merilyn along with the help of her cousin & historian Robbie Schmidt of Iowa, is in the process of updating Merilyn's Jacobs family line. Thank you so much Merilyn & Robbie!

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
